Sorry, you need Java to run the Quoter Amanuensis Applet.

If, quoter, the above Quoter Transformations Java Applet (that can also be run as an application) does not work…

  1. This Java Applet (that can also be run as an application) needs Java 1.5 or later, best version 1.5.0_16 or later, version 1.6.0_10 recommended and a recent browser.
  2. You should see the Applet hybrid above looking much like the screenshot. If you don’t, the following should help you get it working:
  3. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, try another browser. Seriously. Microsoft has taken great pains, over and over, to screw up Java and every other multi-platform standardisation.
  4. If you are using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, you must allow blocked content permission for Active X to run. This also gives permission to Java to run. Click the Information bar, and then click Allow blocked content. Unfortunately, this also allows dangerous ActiveX code to run. However, you must do this in order to get access to perfectly-safe Java Applets running in a sandbox. This is part of Microsoft’s war on Java. Don’t put up with it! Use a different browser.
  5. Especially if this Applet hybrid has worked before, try clearing the browser cache and rebooting.
  6. To ensure your Java is up to date, check with Wassup. First, download it and run it as an application independent of your browser, then run it online as an Applet to add the complication of your browser.
  7. If the above Applet hybrid does not work, check the Java console for error messages.
  8. If the above Applet hybrid does not work, you might have better luck with the downloadable version.
  9. If you still can’t get the program working click HELP for more detail.

This Applet converts raw text with the following possible cleanups:
  1. Quoting for HTML, e.g. & -> & or accented characters like é to é
  2. Quoting for Java Strings.
    e.g. C:\MyDir\MyFile.txt -> "C:\\MyDir\\MyFile.txt"
  3. removing leading and/or trailing spaces.
  4. Translating from the old Windows or IBMOEM character sets.
  5. removing embedded control characters.
  6. Collapsing runs of spaces into a single space.
  7. Collapsing multiple blank lines into a single blank line.
  8. converting to UPPER, lower, or Title case
  9. Aligning space or comma delimited text in columns
  10. Aligning Java source in columns (considers "\"", '\'', /* comment */, //… in column delimiter rules).
  11. Converting raw multiline clipboards into regex expressions for the Funduc Search and Replace utility or Java Regexes. Often followed by converting them to Java string literals.
  12. Stripping HTML tags leaving you with plain text.
  13. Converting HTML entities such as & back and forth to the equivalent plain character &
Just paste the raw text into the upper window, click Convert then copy the converted cooked text from the lower window.

You can probably best understand the Applet by typing sample text in the upper window, and looking what happens to it when you select various options.

If you want to cascade several transformations to the same piece of text, paste the output back into the input box.

The amanuensis is also available with Java source to download. When you run Quoter Amanuensis as an application, it is even more automatic. You don’t need to do any manual pasting and copying. Just click Convert to convert the current contents of the clipboard. The cooked HTML replaces the old the raw text clipboard contents. This automatic feature is not available in the Applet version because the Applet sandbox considers it a security risk.

download Quoter Amanuensis source and compiled class files to run on your own machine as an application or Applet. First install the most recent Java. To install, extract the zip download with WinZip, (or similar unzip utility) into any directory you please, often J:\ — ticking off the “user folder names” option. To run as an application,type:
java -jar J:\com\mindprod\quoter\quoter.jar
adjusting as necessary to account for where the jar file is.
