We were originally planning to stay at Heron House itself, a quaint vine-covered cottage at 646 Maple Road. Then the owner leased it out long term to someone else and arranged for a bigger, but more conventional house two doors right. The water view from both is mesmerising.
If you are driving from the United States you might take the Anacortes ferry to Sydney on Vancouver Island, then drive north to Campbell River. Anacortes is near Mount Vernon north of Seattle, south of Bellingham. It is a scenic trip through the American gulf islands. Most of the ferries do not go all the way to Canada. The 8:20 AM ferry arrives at 10:25 AM. The other Sydney sailing is at 2:00 PM and it takes an hour longer arriving at 5:05 PM. If you miss the Anacortes ferry, you can drive through to Vancouver and take the Horseshoe Bay ferry. You need to make reservations two days in advance, or get there in plenty of time to ensure you will make your sailing.
To get from Vancouver to Victoria, you must use Pacific Coach Lines. Normally you would go more directly via Nanaimo using Greyhound.
If you arrive before Sunday it will be up to you to find accommodation in Vancouver, Victoria, Campbell River or Quadra Island. See accommodation. We don’t have possession of the place until then.
Campbell River is a one and a half hour drive or bus ride north of Nanaimo. Take a 10-minute ferry ride from Campbell River to Quathiaski Cove on Quadra Island. Its a 10-minute drive to Heriot Bay (left when you get off the ferry. You can go via the front road (West Road) or the back road (Heriot Bay Road)). When you get to Heriot Bay, turn sharp right up the hill just past the Cortes ferry line-up. Go immediately left onto Maple Road. Its the fifth drive on the left, #646. Follow the short path down to the ocean to Heron House. We are staying in the bigger house two down. Look for a sign. You cannot see the main house from the parking lot. If you get lost, just ask somebody. Quadra is a very friendly place. Even the teenagers are friendly.
The phone number of the house where we will be staying is (250) 285-2383.
You can use Angela Wensley’s cell phone number (604) 644-1582 or Wendi
Kaiser’s (604) 813-3952 to use in case you get lost. That will be a long
distance call though. It would probably be easiest to take a taxi (250) 285-3598
from the ferry to Heron House. In an emergency you could leave a message with
Joyce Cousins, one of my friends on Quadra, (250) 285-2308. You can also try
email messages to
Please try to avoid phoning or emailing the Inrigs who run Heron house. Let your inquiries go through me so we don’t seem to be pestering them. However, in an emergency you can contact them toll free (877) 777-8133, local (250) 285-3874, or snail mail: Linda or Hughie Inrig, POB 236, 646 Maple Road, Quadra Island, BC, V0P 1H0.
Relax, enjoying the scenic ride there and avoiding panic using the methods if anything goes wrong on the way. The moment you leave your door is the start of the workshop. Not to worry. It is illegal to starve to death in Canada. It is about the safest country on earth for tourists.
The goal is to keep everyone involved all the time with questions, contributing, sharing, and processes. I find juicy examples from real life tend to stick in the mind hundreds of times better than dry generalisations, and are much easier to understand.
I will strongly encourage you to work on real issues from your life and to share the details with the other workshop participants. There will be a fair bit of acting out painful scenes from your life done with humour. It will be designed for newcomer and old-timer alike. I will gently press you to get to the point by asking you specific questions. I won’t let you ramble on and on the way they did in the later days of KKC. Most people don’t find me intimidating because I have a sort of child-like way of prying your deepest secrets out of you and because there is almost no chance I would reject you based on what you said. I am pretty well unshockable. The plan is for an intense experience that makes an immediate, noticeable difference in your life.
Unlike traditional workshops, a major theme will be accepting help from other participants to get rid of your own major addictions, not just learning techniques to use on your own. Others can help you in three ways:
