Registration key Generator

This essay is about a suggested student project in Java programming. This essay gives a rough overview of how it might work. It does not describe an actual complete program. I have no source, object, specifications, file layouts or anything else useful to implementing this project. Everything I have to say to help you with this project is written below. I am not prepared to help you implement it; I have too many other projects of my own.

I do contract work for a living, which could include writing a program such as this. However, I don’t do people’s homework for them. That just robs them of an education.

What is a registration key aka licencing key. When you register software, often the vendor will give you a piece of gibberish, the registration key, that when you enter it into your program unlocks various features and embeds your name into it.

This project consists of two parts:

A progam to generate the license key from the user’ company and name. These are then copy pasted and emailed to the customer. It encrypts a tab separated message containing the company, customer name, and engage field ( a string of letters indicating which extra features are to be engaged.)
A class to embed in the program you wish to licence. It accepts the key from the clipboard (no need to actually paste it). Ensure the key is complete (giving a message if it is too long or too short). Put something distinctive on either end. Decrypt the key, and hand over the name, and company and engage field. This way it does not need any sort of GUI UI. If anything goes wrong (including there being nothing in the clipboard), it raises an exception. The calling program is responsible for displaying the company/name/serial number etc.

The weakness of the scheme is the decryption key must be embedded in the program, where hackers can find it. See the registration key entry for how they are encrypted.
