Bible Thumper

This essay does not describe an existing computer program, just one that should exist. This essay is about a suggested student project in Java programming. This essay gives a rough overview of how it might work. I have no source, object, specifications, file layouts or anything else useful to implementing this project. Everything I have to say to help you with this project is written below. I am not prepared to help you implement it; I have too many other projects of my own.

I do contract work for a living, which could include writing a program such as this. However, I don’t do people’s homework for them. That just robs them of an education.

You have my full permission to implement this project in any way you please and to keep all the profits from your endeavor.

This application is a tool to help people who like debating what the Bible says on various topics. The application loads the Bible into RAM, organising it with arrays for each book and within that each chapter.

You can select book, chapter and verse and see the text. You can key in a word or phrase and see the occurrences in context. You may add notes to a given verse, and search those notes You can generate a bit of HTML to include in some post that will quote some verses and provide HTML to point to a document where you can read it in context, such as version on my website.

There are no copyright problems with the King James version, though there may be with some of the newer translations. The Qur’an has a simpler structure with surahs and verses. You might do a version for it, possibly including the standard commentary (hadith) implemented similar to the notes. You might also do a general version for arbitrary online books organised by chapter and page.
