twip
Twentieth of a point. A unit of measure most commonly seen when writing Microft printer drivers. It is 1/1440 of an inch, 1/20 of a PostScript point. There are 72 PostScript points per inch, slighly different from the printer’s point at 72.27 per inch. A character printed at 10 pitch (10 characters per inch), is 144 twips wide. Twips were devised in the olden days when dot matrix printers were constrained to multiples of either 12 or 10 pitch, and this gave a unit of measure that could handle the width of the various characters the printers could generate on their own.
