Schematron: A language for describing the format of XML files. It allows a more precise description than is possible with a simple DTD. It uses assertions. It looks for patterns in the XML file and reports on what it finds. Schematron itself is a species of XML. The fastest way to understand what it is about is the tutorial.
Here is an example of a Schematron assertion:
