login script
W95/W98/Me/NT has a similar concept to DOS/Win 3.1/W95/W98/Me autoexec.bat called a login script. This is executed when a user logs on. You set these up on a per user basis with start ⇒ Control Panel ⇒ users and passwords ⇒ advanced ⇒ advanced ⇒ users ⇒ Administrator ⇒ properties ⇒ Profile ⇒ profile path ⇒ profile script. There is no equivalent script to autoexec.bat that runs for all users when the system boots. There is no point is doing set commands in a login script since they will be lost. You must configure set parameters for the system and for each user with start ⇒ settings ⇒ Control Panel ⇒ system ⇒ environment. You might but a SUBST J: E:\ command in your login bat file.

Store your *.bat files for the scripts in C:\winnt\system32\repl\import\scripts

Vista

Login Scripts don’t seem to be supported on Vista Home Premium. Presumably they exist in some form in the more expensive editions. Please pass on instructions on how to set them up.

Instead create a shortcut to your *.bat file, click Start ⇒ All Programs ⇒ Startup ⇒ right click Open ⇒ drop the shortcut you want to run on startup into the folder. However, Vista is flaky. These shortcuts may or may not be run on the next reboot. They may work for a while then mysteriously stop working. It is the Vista way,

“First there is a mountain then there is no mountain, then there is.”
