In the old days you had to create your own Collections, such as ArrayList, HashMap, TreeMap, LinkedList etc. but now they come with Java.

Knuth wrote the definitve work on data structures, mostly containers with various types of lookup, decades ago:

Knuth’s volumes 1, 2 and 3 are the reference works for standard algorithms. At his website he describes plans for volumes 4 and 5.
