It is quite intuitive, though sometimes the number of options can be overwhelming.
The backup is considerably faster than just copying files to DVD, and packs more on a DVD.
It can also be command line driven. Type nerocmd.exe to see the massive list of command line options. You can start up the GUI version of Nero with nero.exe or Nero Express with nero.exe /w.
